Systems Change Work

FOCS encourages communities to work together to dismantle systemic racism

Dismantling systemic racism requires collaboration and commitment. FOCS is committed to partnering with families, educators, community and advocacy groups, elected officials, and policymakers to transform racial inequity and create a better world for our children. Our Systems Change work includes:

Advocacy & Mobilization: we partner with organizations aligned with our families’ interests to work on supporting policy issues affecting families, such as reproductive justice, health, and education equity.

Racial Equity Workshops- our workshops promote institutional change and assist community groups, schools, and institutions in navigating conversations around racism so they can effectively work together.

Advocacy & Mobilization

Policies and systems that impact families of color should center the voices of families of color. Families of color feel more supported to use their voices to make change happen if they feel they have a community behind them. Advocacy mobilization involves giving families the tools to advocate for collective change.

We educate, mobilize and amplify the voices of our families to advocate for long-term policy, practice, and/or systems changes that advance racial equity for families of color.

FOCS Legislative & Advocacy Agenda

  • We define reproductive justice as the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, the choice to have or not have children, and parent in safe and sustainable communities.* We believe reproductive justice is a movement extending beyond individual reproductive choice and requires addressing intersecting oppressions to ensure the safety and well-being of all communities. This movement should center the voices of Black women and gender-diverse individuals who have historically been the most marginalized yet most impacted.

  • To achieve health equity, we must acknowledge and address the discriminatory healthcare practices that adversely affect people of color, especially Black and Native individuals and Transgender BIPOC people. This includes issues such as high-risk pregnancy issues, pregnancy loss, preterm births, and infant mortality. We must also address dominant-culture health practices that prevent communities of color from accessing culturally competent services.

  • Children of color are the fastest-growing demographic*, yet our schools are more segregated than they were in the 1960s; this translates to a lack of resources and an achievement gap for our children. We want to ensure that children of color have the same access and opportunities for success while also recognizing the unique needs of BIPOC families and addressing the inherent biases and oppressive practices within educational institutions.
